5 TOP TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR WEDDING MAKEUP TRIAL

So you’ve booked your makeup artist for your wedding day and have arranged a trial appointment, great work! The trial is such an important part in your wedding preparation and can really help you to enjoy the morning of you wedding; you want to be relaxing with a glass of champagne and enjoying time with your loved ones whilst being pampered, not worrying about any logistical issues or how the makeup is going to look.

There are a few key things that will help you to get the most out of your trial appointment, here are some top tips!

Come with some visial aids

It will be really helpful for your makeup artist if they know what sort of look you are going for- both with your makeup but also throughout the whole day- it would be useful to show images of the sort of hair style you are going for, what type of dress you have, flowers, accessories, bridesmaid dresses, plus even things like the wedding venue and the sort of photographer you are working with- are you going for a whimsical, vintage, boho, modern or classic look? Or none of the above! All of this will have a big impact on the colour pallete your makeup artist uses on the day. Pintrest is a great way of creating a moodboard, but even a couple of photos will work.

Think about what you are going to wear

Ideally, you should wear something to your trial that is a similar colour to your dress, with a similar neckline. If this is not possible, try and wear light colours. It may be that you also want to think about body makeup, around the collar bone, chest and possibly arms, this is something you can talk to your makeup artist about.

If you are planning on having a tan, it might be a good idea to have a trial tan done a couple of days before your trial makeup appointment. This will help to create the most like for like image of what everything will look like on the day. If you are going to wear your hair up on the day, wear it up to your appointment, you may even choose to have a hair appointment before your trial; none of this is necessary, but will help you to visualise how everything is going to come together on the day.

Have an open mind

It may be that you come to your appointment with a clear idea in your mind of what your want your makeup to look like, but how an inspo pic looks in reality can be very different- a lot of ‘natural’ makeup looks actually look very heavy in real life and your makeup artist will know this- provide the inspiraton and let your makeup artist use her/ his knowledge and skills to create a look that will work for you.

Also bear in mind that a lot of photos online are often photoshopped and are created using professional models and lighting; it is important to have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with your skin texture etc. Your makeup artist will speak to you about skincare and this will play an important role in how your skin looks on your special day.

Go somewhere nice after your trial

This isn’t essential, but it is useful for you to take your makeup out for a test run- not only to see how it feels but also how it lasts. You will want your makeup to last all day and night and your makeup artist can tweek skincare and application on the day if necessary. Why not book a nice meal out or some drinks with friends and enjoy your makeover!

Whether you go out or not, it will be important for you to wear your makeup for a while after your appointment- for those of you who aren’t used to wearing makeup, you want to get used to how it feels and let it settle before finalise any thoughts. Mascara alone can be something to get used to if you are not used to wearing it.

Be honest

If you aren’t happy with your results, please speak up and let your makeup artist know. It may be that you want to change the look completely, or there could just be elements you want to tweek- both of these are fine! BUT let your makeup artist know as soon as possible. They can then either schedule you in for another appointment or take a note of subtle changes. Makeup artists do get booked up so it is important you do this as soon as possible after the appointment.

I hope these tips are helpful and will help you to make the most of your makeup trial!
